Overwhelm: The Overload Shutdown and How to Short-Circuit the System

Published on 3 March 2025 at 18:52

When the task ahead feels daunting, don’t let circumstances dictate your state of mind.

Instead, take control by breaking the situation into its components—just as you would approach a complex math problem—reducing it to manageable pieces.

The key isn’t just practicing problem-solving but developing awareness and perspective. Understand the scope and significance of the task before you attempt to tackle it. When you have a clear picture, you can craft a plan to respond effectively.

Reject the false narrative that you’re in over your head. Slow down. Resist the urge to rush to conclusions. This way, you give yourself a fighting chance rather than triggering a survival-mode response driven by misperception. Overwhelm is often a byproduct of distorted perspective—short-circuit it by simplifying, and then simplifying some more.
